PWCPS Online Orientation - Reference

This is a quick Reference Manual for the Prince William County Public Schools (PWCPS) New Hire Online Orientation Website. It documents how to navigate through the user interface; and how to perform various functional tasks like viewing videos, downloading PDF's, and how to solve problems or issues you might encounter.

General Information  

This online orientation website was created by the Human Resources Department of PWCPS so that each new hire can view the required orientation videos at their own convenience. The rest of the website devotes itself to preparing the new hire to complete a package of documents that can be mailed or hand delivered to the PWCPS HR Dept.

The employment process consists of 4 sections that must be completed by you to meet the employment processing requirements:

  1. Viewing of Two Mandated Videos
  2. Virginia Teaching Licensure
  3. Compensation
  4. Benefits/Leave

The process will take approximately 1 -2 hours to complete so please plan accordingly. If you need to stop please select the logout link in the upper right hand corner of each page. When you login again later you will need to click through the application and begin where you left off.

System Requirements  

Since this manual serves as a reference, it does not provide any general information on how to use your operating system or web browser. The online orientation was tested using the following browsers and operating systems. There will be slight differences in appearance, functionality and performance, but if the proper software is installed the orientation videos and downloadable PDF's will preform the same. Additionally, review the minimum system requirements to ensure your workstation or home computer is capable of completing this orientation.

Additionally, cookies, and JavaScript should be enabled in the browser settings for proper functionality of the online orientation. While the site may be viewed with phones, a tablet, laptop or desktop is recommended for the best experience.

Required Software  

Important: You will need the following software installed on your workstation/computer to complete the online application:

If you are on a workstation that does not allow you to install software and you need both of the above please logout and utilize another computer/workstation that has the proper software already installed.


Please enter the username and password that was sent to you by the PWCPS Human Resources Department. If you receive the following error message in red, "ERROR: User ID/Password Invalid*," please double check that you have entered the correct information for both the username and password. If either or both are incorrect you will receive the error message. Please make sure to have your "caps lock" off and that your keyboard input device is working properly. The navigation architecture is meant to be sequential so that you will have to view each screen as a liner orientation. Please use the buttons at the bottom of the page to navigate forward

or backwards


Once you have completed a section you can click back to the beginning of the previous section by using the "Contents" progress indicator widget at the upper right. However you cannot go forward only backwards.

Currently if you logout of the orientation before finishing it, you will have to click back through all the screens until you return to where you left off.

PDF Documents  

This online orientation extensively using PDF documents that you will need to print out, fill-in, and sign. When all documents are completed and ready please for submission please mail or drop off at the HR Dept. You will be able to access this orientation again if you need to print out any forms again. Just login as normal and click through the orientation screens.

Adobe Reader 7  

To view these PDF's you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0+ installed on your computer/workstation. We are not responsible for any problems you might experience if you do not have this version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Please make sure to check and find out what version of Adobe Acrobat Reader you are using before you attempt to call or email the HR Dept. You can determine what version you have by opening the Reader application and selecting the Help option on the top toolbar and then selecting About Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this piece of software please download Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 and install it on your workstation or computer. If you do not have permissions to install software on your workstation please discontinue the orientation until you are at a workstation/computer that has the software or lets you install it.

Fillable Forms  

Some of the PDF forms available for printing or saving within the orientation will allow you to fill out parts of the document using your computer. However, you cannot save the form to any type of fixed media with the data you have filled in. You will have to immediately print the form and then complete the rest by hand.

Saving Forms  

You can select the save option within Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 to save the PDF form to some other fixed media (e.g., hard drive, zip drive, floppy disc, USB flash drive, etc.). Please do that for each form you encounter within the orientation website.

Printing Forms  

All PDF forms contained within this orientation must be printed out.

We recommend you check your printer connection, click here to test your printer.

If you cannot print out the forms necessary to complete your orientation process please save them to some other media (e.g., hard drive, zip drive, floppy disc, USB flash drive, etc.), or logout now and login at a computer/workstation with printer access.


Below are a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Error message when clicking on the PDF's?  

If you receive an error message alert when viewing a PDF document that states, "This file may contain newer information then this viewer can support," please immediately upgrade your installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader to Version 7. The fillable forms can only be viewed and completed within the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Can't save PDF form data.  

If you have filled in your PDF with data within the fillable form fields you cannot save that data to your workstations/computer hard drive or other fixed media. To save this data please print the PDF document and complete the rest of it by hand.

Clicking on a PDF link but nothing happens?  

If you click on a link to a PDF document within the application and it does not open within a pop up window. Please check that you do not have a pop up window blocker installed within your browser. If so disable it and click on the link again. If that still does not solve the problem make sure you have JavaScripts enabled within your browser's preferences. Lastly, check to see if you still have a open pop up window on your task bar. You will need to close this pop up window before you click on a link to another PDF document.
